In what appeared to be another loss for the Yankees, as Wang was limp (6 runs in 4.1 innnings) and Farnsworth was his typical self (3 hits and 1 run in 1 inning), a rarely seen pinch hitter came to the plate for the Yanks with 2 outs in the bottom of 9th and won the game.
Who was this rarely seen player? Gimabi’s mustache.
Giambi’s stache came to the plate down 8-7 with Matsui on first. The stache caught a hangling slider and put it over the left field wall for a 9-8 come-back win over Toronto.
As ESPN noted in 2006, when the mustache was still an unproven rookie, “the Giambi mustache may turn out to be the most valuable Yankee mustache since Don Mattingly’s and, undoubtedly, it will soon join a roster of historic Yankee mustaches.”
I think the stache has finally proven himself.
