Whitney Houston and Britney Spears do more than just record platinum records. As starters for the University of Colorado womens basketball team, Houston and Spears share the names, if not the spellings, of two pop music divas. Who knew that Houston could penetrate defenses, or that Spears has a desire to play in the W.N.B.A?

Nancy Lieberman didn’t score last night, in nine minutes of action for the WNBA’s Detroit Shock. The team signed the former Olympian out of desperation, since nearly half their roster was suspended following that fight earlier in the week. By the way, she’s 50, was inducted into the Hall of Fame 12 years ago, and once served as the team’s coach and GM.

Does it take a fight to make the WNBA relevant? I think so. In the closing seconds of the game, LA Sparks’ Candance Parker leg sweeps someone from the Detroit Shock and a pileup ensues. The benches clear and in the mess, Detroit assistant coach Rick Mahorn “accidently” shoves Lisa Leslie to the ground. And then another Sparks player punches Mahorn in the back. The worse part of the whole thing is Cheryl Ford blowing an ACL while trying to restrain her teammate. Am I going to watch the WNBA now, probably not. But it has everyone talking about it for at least one morning.
