Trying to make a go of it betting the NFL is tough, with the roller-coaster rides, the parity, the upsets and everything else that goes with it. How does one make sense of it all, and come out ahead with their NFL picks? As we’ll try to demonstrate below, it ain’t easy.
The Chicago Bears looked pretty good in beating the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, then looked like a team adrift in losing at Green Bay 23-10 last Thursday. Would the real Bears please stand up?
On the other side of that equation the Packers looked very average in losing to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, then dominated Chicago last Thursday.
Playing with a couple extra days to prepare, Chicago is a nine-point favorite for its game Sunday over the 1-1 Rams, while Green Bay is a three-point favorite for its game Monday night at Seattle.
Even with the cloud of the bounty scandal hovering over them the New Orleans Saints still figured to be a pretty good team this season. But so far New Orleans is winless, and sits as the only 0-2 team in the NFC, after losing last week at Carolina 35-27.
Despite their record the Saints are nine-point favorites for their game Sunday over the 0-2 Chiefs.
The Arizona Cardinals pulled off the biggest upset of this early season, their shocking 20-18 victory over New England last week. This week the Cardinals head back home, where they are four-point dogs vs. the Eagles, while the Patriots are three-point dogs on the road at Baltimore Sunday night.
If last week’s Ravens-Eagles game was a preview of this year’s Super Bowl, we’ll have a dandy. Baltimore led most of the way last Sunday in Philly, but the Eagles scored late to steal a 24-23 victory.
For this week Philly, as mentioned above, is a four-point favorite at Arizona, while Baltimore is favored by three points at home over New England Sunday night.
The ultimate roller-coaster squads must be the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets. After looking like Giant-beaters in a Week 1 victory over New York, the Pokes looked positively inept in losing at Seattle last week 27-7. Meanwhile the Jets exploded for 48 points in beating Buffalo in Week 1, then got crushed at Pittsburgh 27-10.
This week Dallas is an eight-point favorite at home over Tampa Bay, while the Jets are favored by one point at Miami.
Finally, the San Francisco 49ers appear to be the best team in the league, after following up their Week 1 win at Lambeau Field with a solid victory over the Detroit Lions Sunday night. For this week the Niners are seven-point road chalk at 1-1 Minnesota.
