It’s Arbor Day, Motherfuckers!
In honor of the occassion, here is a list of sports figures with tree related names that I came up with off the top of my head without doing any preparation or really putting much effort into it at all.
Tree Rollins: He spent 18 years in the NBA, and then became an assistant coach in the NBA and WNBA and a head coach in the NBDL. Tree is not his given name. It is Wayne.
Stump Merrill: Baseball lifer who managed the Yankees for a year and a half. It did not go well. He also has the distinction of being preceded in the dugout by Bucky Dent and followed by Buck Showalter. Those two people have similar nicknames. Stump is not his real name. It’s Carl.
Branch Rickey: We all know that he brought Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers, and broke the color line. But he was also responsible for finding Roberto Clemente, inventing the concept of the farm system and assembling the Gashouse Gang in St. Louis. Branch is his middle name. His given first name was Wesley.
Ryan Leaf: Everyone’s favorite biggest bust in NFL history turned community college golf turned West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach turned indicted burglar and drug possessor. His real name is Ryan Leaf.
Tree: Tree is the best defender in the league. It stands tall in the front yard of 157 Kings Mountain Road in Freehold, New Jersey, knocking down any footballs or wiffle balls that dare enter it’s territory. Tree’s real name is Morris K. McGillicutty IV.
