ESPN vs. Deadspin

Yesterday, Deadspin reacted to the Steve Phillips news by going ahead and publishing pretty much every rumor of bad behavior at ESPN that they’ve ever received.

Today, a spokesperson for ESPN responded.  Angrily:

“Deadspin’s self-admitted rumor mongering is despicable behavior by any standard and shows callous disregard for its impact on people’s lives. It is not worthy of response and those responsible should be called to account. ESPN is home to thousands of hard working, creative and caring people who are the key to our success. Our company is not perfect but we will continue to do all we can to provide each of our employees with a positive working environment.”

I’m no PR whiz, but it seems to me the best way to end coverage of a story is to let it die. ESPN’s response gives it legs for at least another day.

Now would be the time to make a joke about how the PR guy was probably so busy screwing interns he didn’t have time to think this through. But, it’s the end of the day and I’m tired. Feel free to make your own joke.
