Against the Spread: 2009 College Football Week 6

King Ing October 9, 2009 2

It was a pretty uneventful, yet positive start to the handicapping season for me. Hopefully this week brings me better luck.

And yes, this week there will be NFL picks as a couple games distinctly stand out.

Auburn vs Arkansas 12PM

The hype surrounds Arkansas’ Ryan Mallet, but in my opinion Auburn’s Chris Todd (12 TD‘s 1 INT this season) has been the better QB thru five weeks. With his efficient passing and the Tigers ability to control the ground game look for Auburn to pull away at the end in what is expected to be a shootout.

Pick – 2 unit Auburn -2

Purdue vs Minnesota 12PM

Both teams are in need of a win to keep their bowl hopes alive. Unfortunately for the Boilermakers their secondary is atrocious. Minnesota’s Eric Decker will exploit it for double digit catches and the defense will do just enough to cover the number.

Pick – 3 units Minnesota -3

Alabama vs Ole Miss 3:30 PM

If Jevan Snead had trouble with the Vanderbilt and South Carolina defenses, what is Ole Miss’ offensive line going to do when the Tide come to town. Terrence Cody is going to eat these guys alive.

Now on the other side of the ball, Alabama will feature a heavy dose of Mark Ingram and just enough of Greg McElroy’s passing game to win this game EASILY

Pick – 5 units Alabama -4.5

Oregon vs UCLA 3:30PM

Since their opening day loss on the blue turf of Boise, there may not be a hotter team in the country than the Oregon Ducks. It will be quite a battle as LaMichael James leads the rushing attack and Jeremiah Masoli airs the ball out against the stout UCLA defense. The difference in this game should be the defense of Oregon’s facing a Bruins offense that is facing many injures. Kenny Rowe should be able to get pressure on whoever is quarterbacking for UCLA. The line continues to drop from the open and I find no reason why.

Pick – 2 units Oregon -3.5

Florida vs LSU 8PM

Whether Tim Tebow plays or not, the LSU defense will have to play at a far superor level than they have so far this season. They have only registered 5 sacks. If you give Tebow or backup John Brantley that much time they will carve up that Tiger defense. But a gut feeling tells me that on national TV the defense will come to play getting pressure and holding down the running game of Brandon Spikes. Mix in some clean quarterback play from Jordan Jefferson, LSU should be able to cover the spread.

Pick – 1 unit LSU +8

Michigan vs Iowa 8PM

It seems like Michigan plays nothing but close games this year. This game will be no different. As long as the Wolverines don’t give Iowa a short field they should be able to stay in this game. The Hawkeyes boast a mediocre offense at best. What wins them games is their stronghold defensive unit. Tate Forcier has made magic happen all year and to think any different this weekend would be foolish. Take the points

Pick – 1 unit Michigan +8

Record: 4-3 +1.5 Units
