Over the last couple of months boxing has lost three great warriors in Alexis Arguello, Vernon Forrest, and Arturo Gatti. And in a classy manner HBO Boxing pays tribute to them with a great video. I would be lying if I said I didn’t shed a tear watching this.
Makes me think of what a great sport boxing can be.
And then we had to witness this travesty. After a great fight between Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Diaz, boxing again showed how corrupt it can be. While in my mind the Brooklyn’s Malignaggi clearly won the fight, the judges ruled in favor of Diaz (115-113, 116-112, 118-110!). If you watch the video there is no way Diaz could have won 10 out of the 12 rounds.
Oh BTW, did I mention this was fought in Diaz’s hometown of Houston, TX?!?! With a referree from Texas. And the judge, Gale Van Hoy who scored it 118-110 was also from “the Lonestar State.” Paulie was basically handed a stacked deck before he even stepped into the ring.
And boy did he let the boxing world know about it. Even as Max Kellerman tried to brush aside the controversial comments, Malignaggi continued to unleash venom from his mouth. Good for him and about time someone stands up to the boxing world and its corrupt ways.
