Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen (of the Tennessee Cohens) is the latest politician to dip his toe into the waters of the sports world.
He’s written a letter to David Stern, decrying the rule that amateur players must be 19 before they can enter the NBA draft. The correspondence itself is well written and the arguments are presented intelligently.
But, then Cohen decided to speak to the NY Times, and he pulled out this old chestnut:
â€œItâ€™s a vestige of slavery,â€ Cohen said Wednesday in a phone interview, noting that most of the players affected by the rule are African-American. â€œNot like the slavery of 150 years ago, but itâ€™s a restraint on a personâ€™s freedoms and liberties.â€
Ah, yes, the slavery.
