Cycling has seen a steep decline in viewership, sponsorship, and respect since Lance Armstrong took his final bow after winning his 7th consecutive Tour de France in 2005. Yesterday we heard reports from UCI president Pat McQuaid that Armstrong applied to re-enter the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s out-of-competition testing — and today it’s official, as Armstrong posted a short video online announcing his plan to return to cycling in 2009, as he sits unshaven in what appears to be his kitchen.
So what is Armstrong’s motivation for coming back?
Is he really doing this for a global cancer campaign? Or does he have a chip on his shoulder and want to prove that he can win the Tour with today’s more thorough drug-testing? Or maybe Armstrong is coming back to raise the awareness of his FRS energy drink?
Either way, Lance’s comeback sets the promotional gears in motion with more hype details coming September 24th. We’ll spend the next 2 weeks talking about this non-stop — and we’re psyched that Lance’s comeback coincides with his nomination in our tourney bracket.
