The Spanish Have More Heart Than The French

California Correspondent September 6, 2008 0

Unlike the 2008 Tour de France, where the French won an insignificant number of stages and not a single Frenchman landed in the top 10 overall, the 2008 Vuelta a España is being dominated by the Spanish riders, with 6 of the top 10 riders hailing from Spain. And not only do we have a bunch of Spaniards near the lead, but the race now heads into the mountains where 2007 Tour de France Winner Alberto Contador and 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre are expected to duke it out.

Here are the top 10 after stage 6, where American Levi Leipheimer just gave up his lead to Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel (for the moment at least).

1 Sylvain Chavanel, (FRA) Cofidis
2 Levi Leipheimer, (USA) Astana at :10
3 Alejandro Valverde, (ESP) Caisse d’Epargne at :26
4 Alberto Contador, (ESP) Astana at :57
5 Carlos Sastre, (ESP) CSC at 1:37
6 Daniele Bennati, (ITA) Liquigas at 1:42
7 Antonio Flecha, Juan (ESP) Rabobank at 2:01
8 Dominique Cornu, (BEL) Silence-Lotto at 2:06
9 Daniel Moreno FernÁndez, (ESP) Caisse d’Epargne at 2:20
10 Igor Anton, (ESP) Euskaltel-Euskadi at 2:27
