Celtics 108 Lakers 102 – Boston is two games away from it’s 17th NBA championship. But they didn’t make it easy on themselves. The Lakers were down 24 points with eight minutes to go, but went on a 31-9 run to pull to 104-102 on two free throws by Kobe Bryant with 38 seconds left. Unfortunately for them Paul Pierce (28 pts) was on the court for the Celtics. He drew a foul, made both FT’s and then blocked a Sasha Vujacic three pointer on the other end. James Posey rebounded the block and made the free throws to ice the game.
It was little known Leon Powe that sparked Boston. He came in and used energy and hard work to score 21 points in only 15 minutes of play. He ran the floor, filled the lane on fastbreaks, and on one play drove coast to coast for a dunk against the nonexistent Lakers defense. He was the X-factor. The guy who is needed in a playoff series to push a team over the top.
Los Angeles goes back to the Staples Center hoping that they don’t face the free throw disparity that they had in game 2 (10 attempts to Boston’s 38). Kobe led the Lakers with 30 pts. The pivotal game 3 is Tuesday night and we will find out if the Lakers make this a series or the Celtics pull one game away from another banner.
