Lakers 89 Spurs 85 – With LA down 20 midway into the third quarter, Kobe Bryant turned into Mr. Incredible. A fictional character known for his strength and durability, Bryant channeled that character on the court; scoring 25 of his 27 points after the intermission. With the score 65-45 and the Lakers looking at losing home court advantage, the reigning MVP led the comeback scoring seven points and dishing 2 assists in a 14-0 run. The momentum carried Los Angeles to the lead, but a Tim Duncan (30 pts 18 reb) tip in with 41 seconds left tied the score at 85.
Everyone knew where the ball was going with the game on the line. Kobe Bryant drove hard right, stopped on a dime ten feet out and made the short jumper. Manu Ginobili, who struggled all game long missed a three pointer for the lead. Two free-throws by Sasha Vujacic sealed game 1 for the Lakers. In a game which seemed to be controlled by the defending champs, the reigning MVP took over and led his team to a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 is Friday night.
