So, let’s get this out of the way before I start. I haven’t watched a second of either the Red Wings or the Stars this season. In fact, I had to look up who was playing, before I decided to write a Western Conference Finals preview. Still, I’m confident I can predict the outcome.
Here’s how I see it:
Detroit has won multiple cups in the past decade and a half. A number of the key players are still there, including Nicky Lidstrom and a reborn Chris Osgood. They also have three dynamic offensive players in Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg. They’re first round of Cups were delivered by an influx of Russian players. All three of those guys sound foreign too, so that’s a good sign.
Dallas still has Mike Modano, which is shocking. He’s been there since before they left Minnesota, and co-starred with Basil McRae in the original Mighty Ducks movie. They also have Sergei Zubov, who was the Rangers leading scorer when the won the cup in ’94, and, as a result, one of my personal favorities. The team captain is Brendan Morrow. During Dallas’s first cup run, Morrow dated Guy Carbonneau’s daughter. Morrow and Carbonneau were teammates at the time. Would you trust one of your co-workers with your teenage daughter? Exactly. He must be a great guy.
So there you have it. Insightful scouting reports for both teams. I say Detroit in 5. You’ll have to let me know if I’m right, because I have no plans on watching this series at all. Pittsburgh/Philly sounds good, though.
